Harry and Paul Present: The Gentlemen's Club, which was written by and starring Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse, with guest stars Jim Broadbent, Tom Hollander, Amelia Bullmore and Jason Lewis.  It is a pretend documentary, brilliantly achieved, about a club whose members are mostly posh old men whose speech and attitudes display their age.  They drink, gossip, observe life, fuzzily marking its changes, eat school-style food.  The script captures both their absurdity and pathos, their condescension meant as kindness, the real world churning away to make the old chaps still feel at home.  It's comedy on a different scale, transforming the merely funny into the profoundly true.  I doubt if Radio 2 can afford a whole series.  I have no doubt at all that this is the best new comedy I have heard in a very long time.

Fun

One book that does not appear in the list of Churchill’s writings is a biography of Napoleon Bonaparte. It was not for lack of interest....
