The Pope wears a gold ring known as the 'fisherman's ring', because it contains an image of St Peter fishing (St Peter, the first Bishop of Rome, was a fisherman, and was told by Jesus that he would make him a 'fisher of men'). Each Pope's fisherman's ring is unique to him and carries his name. It is broken on his death.
