Florence Nightingale was born in Florence and named after the city by her parents, who were travelling in Italy.  Her sister Parthenope was similarly named after her birthplace Naples, formerly Parthenope, a Greek settlement, now part of that city.  In1857 Florence Nightingale was regarded as being, after long illness, at the point of death: she had herself arranged all the details of her funeral.  She lived till 1910, and died at the age of ninety.

Florence Nightingale’, Cecil Woodham-Smith, Constable, 1950
