Sir Timothy Bevan completed five trans-Atlantic crossings, four in his own boat.  He relished a story of sailing in Rhode Island and witnessing the pomposity of an American banker. "He had one of those ghastly motor boats, with wireless aerials in all directions.  He then promptly drove this thing onto a rock.  Being an efficient man, he naturally contacted the coastguards on his VHF radio.  'Mayday, Mayday,' he called.  The coastguards asked him 'What is your exact position,' to which he replied: 'executive vice-president, First National Bank of Boston.'

Obituary Sir Timothy Bevan, former chairman of  Barclays Bank, 1927 - 2016, The Times, February 15th, 2016
